The interviewer asks this question to test your persuasive skills. It's clear why an interviewer would ask this if you're applying for a sales position, but it can also be useful for other positions. Consultants, for example, need to persuade clients to accept their recommendations. Teachers need persuasive skills to motivate students. There are many jobs that require these skills.

TIPS:

Stay calm and confident and use body language—eye contact, sitting up straight, etc.—that shows you can handle a high-pressure situation.
Make sure you listen and understand your “customer’s” needs.
Be specific about the item’s features and benefits.
Wrap up your answer as though you were truly closing a deal.
