How to introduce examples in writing

We use some transition words and phrases to introduce examples of ideas. Here are some of the most useful ones:

    for example,       for instance,      for one thing,      specifically,      such as,       including,       to illustrate        namely

We use most of these words and phrases at the beginning of a sentence or clause. Look at these examples:

    Life in the countryside is much better for families with children. For one thing, the air and water are cleaner.

    Parents send their children to preschool for a variety of reasons. For instance, they may want their children to learn to socialize with others.

    Having a pet has numerous benefits. For example, a pet provides constant companionship. 

Such as and including can come after the word they explain.

    Young people often want to go into high-paying professions such as doctor, lawyer, or business executive. 

    City life has many advantages including access to the best educational opportunities.

Match each sentence or phrase in column A with a sentence or phrase in column B. Add capital letters and periods as appropriate. You will not use all the choices.
