Writing

There is an Eiken Test in Japan. It has 7 grades, and it is composed of three sections: writing, listening and an interview.

Many years ago, I took the test twice. First I took grade 3, second I took grade pre2. I passed both of them. A few months after the test, I thought I was going to take grade 2, and bought a workbook for the test. But it was too difficult for me to study, so I gave up.

In July of this year, my younger granddaughter tried the Eiken grade pre 2. She had studied very hard and passed. She is a third year middle school student, and she's good at taking tests. Next year, she has to take the high school entrance exam. The Eiken certification seems to be a great advantage for her.

I hope she can pass the all the exams she takes, and gets into the school where she wants to go!

Have a good day,
Yasuko

Hi Katherine,

Would you ever consider taking the test again? Anyway good luck to your granddaughter. Young minds learn quickly, I bet she'll do well.

Here are some points:

  1. The test is... and it has... (It has 7 grades, and it is...)
  2. "I took the test" just use the simple past in a complex sentence.
  3. "At first" is used to talk about change over time: "at first I didn't like olives, but now I like them."
  4. Just use "first" to order words.
  5. In general, if you have a choice, in English it's better not to use nouns for people (test-taker), it's better to say "she is good at taking tests"
  6. Just use "exam"
  7. She wants to go to a school, and she will take a test. Careful about making your verb agree with the object.

That's it! Take care,

-Jeremy

Hello Jeremy,

Thank you for your correction. I could understood your some advice.

I would like to ask you about this sentence: she is a tast -taker. I want to say that she has to take some entrance exams to get into a high school next year. We call that kind of people 受験生 in Jaopanese.  I looked up the 受験生 in a dictionary, ant it said a test-taker. If you have any proper word for it, could you tell me. I'm looking forward to your mail. Thank you!!

   Best,

  Yasuko

Hi Yasuko,

You're right, 受験生 means "test-taker" but it's very rare and a little strange to use that style. It's better to say "she will take tests" or, more specifically "she will take high-school entrance exams." This style is the best if your meaning is neutral. In English "she's a test-taker" is slightly positive I feel, so that why I wrote "she's good at taking tests."

take care,

-Jeremy.

  Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for your reply. I think this sentence is suitebule for my thinking "she will take high-school entrance exams."

It is really difficult to say something in English, but I never give up!   I always thank your support.

  Have a good day

Hi Yasuko,

I just noticed that you had shared this writing, and your email was there in the message to us. That made your email public! I think that if you do that, you can get a lot of spam or strange messages. I deleted that part, but because of that, the changes that Jeremy made can no longer be displayed. I am very sorry about that! (And sorry to you too Jeremy.)

Have a nice weekend,
Matthew
