What is the most memorable place you have visited?
The most memorable place I have been was an ancient building that was a cathedral, then a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. It's known as the Hagia Sophia and was built in the 500s CE as an Orthodox cathedral. It was the largest cathedral in the world for hundreds of years after that. When the Ottoman Empire took control in 1453, the cathedral was converted to a mosque and many of the Christian symbols and icons were removed or painted over. In 1931, it was closed for renovation and reopened as a museum with much of the Christian symbolism restored. To see such an ancient, awe-inspiring building with both Muslim and Christian murals, symbols, and history was something I'll never forget.
