Where are you from? Was it a good place to grow up? Tell us as much as you can about the place and the people and your childhood. What did you used to do? What did you like—and not like—about it?
Make sure you use vivid details and stories to paint a picture in the reader's mind.
My hometown, Geneseo, NY, was a great place to grow up. It's a small town with a big university, and it's not far from a city. Because of the university, there are lots of cultural events and a great library. For other things, like shopping and movies, you can get to the city pretty easily.
It's also a beautiful place! There's a huge park nearby with a long river and high waterfalls. In the summer you can go river rafting, or hiking, or have picnics. There's a lot to do in the winter, too. One time we went tubing, which is like sledding only in an inner tube, down a steep slope in the middle of the woods. The tube went really fast, and you had to be careful not to crash into any trees! It was scary and exciting at the same time.
On the other hand, life in a small town isn't always easy. Everyone knows everyone, so it's like living in a fish bowl, as they say. And it can be harder to fit in. For example, making friends in school can be difficult, since there aren't very many students. That can make it herd to find kids like you, or who you like. On the other hand, it does teach you how to get along with people!
All in all, there were more good things about being in Geneseo than bad. I'm really glad I had the chance to grow up there.
