Have you ever lived abroad to study or work for a long time? Think about these things when writing your answer:

Did the experience change you in any way? How?
Did your thoughts or feelings about your country change? How?
What did you miss about home?
Did you realise that there are some things about your home country that could be done better or differently?

Examples and hints

This is a typical GBC test question. If you are preparing for the GBC, be sure to use a full argument structure:

Beginning—clear claim.

Middle—specific evidence and strong reasoning.
End—transition word/phrase, then restate claim.
This is a perfect question for a balanced answer with both sides of the argument. You might also wish to use an evidence-first structure.

If you are preparing for the TOEFL, this is typical of the Independent writing task (30 minutes): write an essay based on personal experience in response to a writing topic.
